British Prefer Celebration Of Life Instead Of Religious Ceremonies

At some point or another, families need to accept that they will eventually require funeral services. Death is a part of life and it is important to be prepared whether or not you consider it morbid. In the UK, people consider funerals are celebrations of life instead of a religious send-off.

According to an analysis of survey results undertaken by Stephen Bullivant for British Social Attitudes Survey and European Social Survey, 48.6% of the UK population considered themselves non-religious while 43% called themselves as Christians. For over two decades, most British groups consider themselves without religion.

The results are further proven by the results of SunLife’s annual Cost of Dying report wherein funeral directors said that religious services have decreased and families are now choosing celebration of life services. At least 45% of the funeral directors surveyed said that there are no longer hymns during funeral services and the most popular song chosen is “Always look on the bright side of life” from Monty Python’s Life and Brian. Some families also choose Queen’s “Another one bites the dust” and Meatloaf’s “Bat out of hell.”

Surprisingly, one of every 8 people has made a special request of “no black” during the funeral with specific colours and sports team t-shirts. It makes sense that people are now planning their funerals in advance so that they can arrange for a perfect send-off with colours, music and themes of their choice. It also relieves families of the burden of deciding when they do not have any idea on the dearly departed’s wishes.

The pre-paid funeral plan allows people to plan and pay for their funeral while they are still alive. One of the benefits is the fixed cost meaning that the surviving family will not be paying extra for the funeral services even with inflation and economic instability. Families do not only save money; they are saved from stress and worry.
