Experts Weigh In On The Drink Driving Problem In Thailand

Thailand is known all over the world for its parties and night life which is why many tourists are coming to the country to experience it. There are many bars and hotspots for night life such as the rooftop bar in Sukhumvit wherein one can get a luxury experience. The problem now that arises with drinking is caused by drunk driving. While there are many responsible local drivers, there are those that do not think about the consequences because of the lenient punishment for drunk drivers in the country.

It is now proposed by the Road Safety Policy Foundation that harsher punishments should be imposed. The said punishments for drunk drivers should have no suspended sentences. This is in an attempt to decrease the number of road accidents that result to the rise in number of deaths.

The manager of academic resources of the foundation, ThanaphongChinnawing, said that 15,000 people are killed annually because of drunk driving that result to road accidents in the country.

Health advocates are now calling for the authorities to impose stronger measures in order to lessen the number of death tolls.

Upon inspection of the death certificates that were gathered from state agencies, it was found out that majority of the victims of drunk driving are pedestrians and some are traffic police.

These drunk drivers are not paying any attention to road warnings and they are used to taking advantage of the fact that the law is quite weak when it comes to driving under the influence of alcohol.

According to the perspective of Dr.Thanaphong, the reason why these drivers are not scared is because the penalties for such crime are very weak. Most of them are only given suspended jail terms despite people dying from the road accident where they are involved.

He added that drunk driving should not be considered as a careless act because it is very dangerous and claims the lives of many thus it should be punished accordingly.

This is a reminder to those who are drinking and driving locals since majority of the tourists in the country who frequents night spots and rooftop bar in Sukhumvit are not driving and most of them are commuting.
